Research Assistant/Post Doctoral Scientist Positions
Phylogica is an Australian-based biotechnology company that is applying its proprietary Phylomer® drug discovery platform to develop novel peptide-based therapies for human diseases. Phylogica has recently announced a collaboration with Roche and is currently expanding its relationships with other pharmaceutical partners. Phylogica is listed on the ASX (PYC) and is based at the Telethon Institute of Child Health Research in Perth, Western Australia.
We are seeking highly motivated, ambitious and skilled individuals to fill Research Assistant and Post Doctoral Scientist positions in our Protein expression, Bioassay and Phage display groups.. Selection Criteria Position 1: Research Assistants (Molecular Biology with Antimicrobial Focus)
An experienced Research Assistant with experience in Molecular Biology
Activities will include:
- Cloning and expression of proteins/peptides or single-chain antibodies
- Analysis of proteins using ELISA, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and immuno-blotting, small-scale protein purification
- DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatic analysis of derived peptide sequences/structures
- Construction of peptide libraries in bacteriophage and yeast
- Screening of peptide libraries using genetic screening approaches such as phage display
- Characterisation of peptide/protein interactions using ELISA
- Bacterial inhibition (MIC) tests, antibiotic resistance tests
- Contributing to team activities for maintenance of laboratory and database management
Essential
- A B.Sc (Hons) in appropriate disciplines such as Molecular Biology or biochemistry
- At least 2-4 years post-degree experience involving successful application involving a range of appropriate Molecular Biology and protein expression techniques, including DNA amplification and cloning, DNA and RNA preparation, PCR and restriction analysis
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to maintain accurate research records
- Enthusiasm to work on commercially-orientated project
- Ability to work independently
Desirable
- Experience with high-throughput screening methods such as phage display
- Previous experience with protein expression

Selection Criteria Position 2: Postdoctoral Scientist (Molecular Biology with Antimicrobial Focus)
An experienced Post Doctoral Scientist is required with extensive experience in Molecular Biology and/or microbiology
Activities will include:
- Cloning and expression of proteins/peptides or single-chain antibodies; sourcing of suitable vectors and expression strains
- Analysis of proteins using ELISA, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and immuno-blotting, small-scale protein purification
- DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatic analysis of derived peptide sequences/structures
- Construction of peptide libraries in bacteriophage and yeast
- Screening of peptide libraries using genetic screening approaches such as phage display
- Characterisation of peptide/protein interactions using ELISA

Selection Criteria Position 3 – Postdoctoral Scientist (Protein expression)
A Postdoctoral Scientist with experience in molecular biology and recombinant protein expression
Activities will include:
- Cloning and Expression of proteins/peptides
- Protein/peptide purification using various chromatography techniques
- Analysis of proteins using ELISA, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis
- Analysis of peptides/proteins using HPLC
- Analysis of protein/peptide interactions and structures using various biophysical techniques including Biacore, Isothermal Titration Calorimetry and Circular Dichroism.
- Bioinformatic analysis of peptide sequences/structures.
- Contributing to team activities for maintenance of laboratory and database management
- Data presentation in a group setting
Essential
- A PhD in an appropriate discipline such as biochemistry and protein chemistry
- At least 2-4 years post-doctoral experience in the appropriate Molecular Biology and Protein Expression Techniques
- Extensive experience in protein chromatography (AKTA FPLC platform)

- Analysis of proteins using ELISA, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis
- Assist with analysis of peptides/proteins using FPLC/HPLC
- Analysis of protein/peptide interactions and structures using various biophysical techniques including Biacore, Isothermal Titration Calorimetry and Circular Dichroism.

Selection Criteria Position 6 – Research Assistant (Bioassay Development/Screening)
Qualifications and Experience:
Will have relevant undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications and several years of laboratory experience including a range of multidisciplinary skills, encompassing in vitro cell culture, basic molecular biology techniques and an appreciation for good laboratory practise.
Duties:
- A variety of in vitro immunological assays, such as tissue culture and measurement of cell products using proliferative, ELISA and real-time PCR assays.
- Perform a variety of in vivo immunological assays.
- Analysis of data using statistical and database computer packages
- Participation in the planning of experiments
- Undertake laboratory work consistent with the requirement of Good Laboratory Practice
- Assist with the preparation of publications and reports
- Maintain current knowledge of scientific literature relating to the project
- Liaising with other team members across Commercial Ready group
Essential
- A BSc (Hons) in appropriate disciplines such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Immunology
- Minimum 2-4 years post-degree experience
- Experience involving a range of immunological techniques, including in vivo assay implementation and sample collection
- Experience in the analysis of samples by ELISA, FACS and proliferative assay techniques
- Experience in tissue culture techniques
- Experience involving a range of molecular biology techniques, such as DNA amplification and cloning, DNA and RNA purification, PCR and restriction analysis
